Professor Ikuo Takahashi’s Lifetime Achievements
Dr. Ikuo Takahashi is a professor at the Department of Marketing, School of Business, Aoyama Gakuin University in Tokyo, and holds the honorary title of Professor Emeritus at Keio University. He obtained his doctoral degree from Keio University. Further, he enriched his academic journey by participating in Ph.D. seminars led by Professor Philip Kotler and Professor Sidney Levy during his one-year study abroad at the Graduate School of Northwestern University, funded by the Rotary Foundation in 1984. In 1998, he researched consumer behavior with Professor Michel Laroche as a visiting professor at Concordia University in Canada. In 1999, he dedicated himself to retail research with Professor Charles Ingene as a visiting professor at the University of Washington.
Professor Takahashi has been actively engaged in international activities related to the Global Marketing Conference (GMC). He served as a track chair for the joint conference of the Korean Academy of Marketing Science (KAMS) and the Academy of Marketing Science (AMS) held in Seoul in 2006. Furthermore, he acted as the Conference Co-Chair for the GMC held in Tokyo (2010) and Seoul (2012) and received the GMC Excellent Service Award, respectively. Additionally, he played a pivotal role as a Vice President of the Japan Society of Marketing and Distribution (JSMD) during the establishment of GAMMA. Moreover, he contributed significantly as a guest editor of the Journal of Global Scholars of Marketing Science, Australasian Marketing Journal, and other publications.
Professor Takahashi has published more than 30 papers in international academic journals such as the Journal of Business Research, Psychology & Marketing, Journal of Marketing Channels, and Australasian Marketing Journal, as well as approximately 40 papers in Japanese academic journals. At the GMC in Shanghai in 2008, a co-authored paper with Professor Ingene received the prestigious "Best of the Best Paper Award." Furthermore, his authored academic book "Consumer Purchasing Behavior" received the JSMD Award in 2,000.
During his 29-year tenure at Keio University, Professor Takahashi contributed to education as a marketing professor and served as the principal of Keio University’s Shiki Senior High School from 2012 to 2016. Moreover, from 2017 to 2021, he concurrently held the position of Vice-President (a chief finance and fundraising officer) at Keio University.
In March 2023, Professor Takahashi retired from Keio University upon reaching the mandatory retirement age. He was granted the honorary title of Professor Emeritus. He began his role as a professor at Aoyama Gakuin University in April of the same year, where he continues his research and educational pursuits in the field of marketing.
